Dermatographism
Dermatographism presents as raised, red lines, on areas where the skin was lightly scratched. In this condition skin cells are overly sensitive to minor injury, which can cause discomfort. Triggers include scratching, pressure, cold, heat, exercise, sunlight and sometimes emotion. Redness, itching and swelling (similar to hives) are all symptoms. Symptoms can present within minutes of a trigger, and typically resolve within 15 minutes.
Dermographism can occur at any age, but is more common in young adults in their 20’s and 30’s. It is common in people who have other atopic skin conditions like dermatitis, allergies, and/or a family history of the condition.
